Preview: St. Francis Knights vs. Mount Vernon Mustangs
The St. Francis Knights will be playing at home against the Mount Vernon Mustangs at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Tuesday, St. Francis beat Whitefield Academy 76-65. Given St. Francis' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 163rd, while Whitefield Academy is ranked 389th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
St. Francis' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Greg Howard led the charge by scoring 32 points along with six assists and five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Howard has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Reynolds Escher, who scored 15 points along with nine assists and eight rebounds.
Mount Vernon suffered their closest defeat since December 27, 2023 on Tuesday. They fell just short of Paideia by a score of 61-58. It was the first time this season that Mount Vernon let down their fans at home.
St. Francis' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-8. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.7 points per game. As for Mount Vernon, their defeat ended a 13-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-9.
