Basketball Recap: Kaitlyn Keener's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mitchell over South Platte

After flying high against Wallace last Tuesday, Mitchell came back down to earth. The Mitchell Tigers took a 30-26 hit to the loss column at the hands of the South Platte Blue Knights. The Tigers' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Mitchell's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kaitlyn Keener, who posted four points and six rebounds. What's more, Keener also racked up four assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2023. Kate Pieper was another key player, putting up eight points and six steals.

Even though they lost, Mitchell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

South Platte got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Isabelle Reichman out in front who put up 15 points.

Mitchell's loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for South Platte, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-3.

Mitchell will be playing at home against Gordon-Rushville at 5:30 p.m. on January 10th. As for South Platte, they will venture away from home to face off against Kimball at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. South Platte is facing Kimball at the right time seeing as Kimball is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
