Baseball Recap: Laurel Takes a Loss

Laurel dropped their record down to 4-7 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They came up short against the Ellwood City Wolverine, falling 10-3. The Spartans were not able to make up for their loss to the Wolverine from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Tyler Shearer was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

As for Ellwood City, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.

On Ellwood City's side, Owen Andrews looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Andrews has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Ellwood City got a massive performance out of Jacob Biskup, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That's the most hits Biskup has posted since back in May of 2024. Samuel Landis also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Laurel will welcome Aliquippa at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans are facing the Quips at the right time seeing as the Quips are stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Ellwood City, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Beaver Falls at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.44 runs per game on average), something the Wolverine will no doubt try to take advantage of.
