Baseball Game Preview: Gateway Eagles vs. East Lee County Jaguars

Gateway is a perfect 5-0 against East Lee County since March of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Gateway Eagles will face off against the East Lee County Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. Gateway will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

While Gateway didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victor by a 14-4 margin over Gateway Charter on Wednesday. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.

Gateway got a great performance from Brady Miller as he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Miller a new career-high.

At the plate, Jacob Hardman was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Anthony Medina, who scored three runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-2.

Gateway always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, East Lee County came up short against Gateway on Tuesday, falling 11-4. The Jaguars have struggled against the Eagles recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meetings.

Gateway pushed their record up to 6-3 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for East Lee County, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Gateway took their win against East Lee County in their previous matchup on Tuesday by a conclusive 11-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for Gateway since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
