Softball Recap: Lafayette Jefferson's Winning Streak Snapped at Five Games

Lafayette Jefferson dropped their record down to 12-9 on Thursday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the North Newton Spartans by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Bronchos have suffered since April 13, 2024.

Rilee Clifton made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run.

As for North Newton, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-3-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games.

On North Newton's side, Sydney Rainford made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out 21 batters over nine innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). Rainford has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, two RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, Caylee Oxley was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Riley Higgins was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

Coming up, Lafayette Jefferson will take on Anderson at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for North Newton, they will welcome Hanover Central at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
