Basketball Game Preview: River Pilots vs. Steubenville Big Red

River has gone a perfect 3-0 against Steubenville recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The River Pilots will venture away from home to take on the Steubenville Big Red at 6:00 p.m. River will be strutting in after a victory while Steubenville will be coming in after a loss.

River is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing Catholic Central: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that River blew Catholic Central out of the water with a 55-21 final score. The Pilots have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 contests by 20 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Steubenville came up short against Morgantown on Saturday and fell 63-50. While losing is never fun, the Big Red can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 97th in Ohio, while the Mohigans are ranked first in West Virginia).

River has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.8 points over those games. As for Steubenville, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-7.

River didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Steubenville in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, but they still walked away with a 52-48 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Steubenville's Nylah McShan, who went 9 of 13 en route to 22 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Now that she's got a second chance to win this matchup, will River still be able to contain McShan? There's only one way to find out.
