Softball Recap: Newport Cubs vs. Siuslaw Vikings
While Newport's victory against Siuslaw wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Cubs narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Vikings 7-6. The Cubs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Vikings on Tuesday, too.
Olivia Greenawald made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emry Belloni, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Izzie Stark, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Newport's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Siuslaw, they are on a nine-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will host North Bend at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Siuslaw, they will welcome Sweet Home at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
