Baseball Recap: Mercer County Comes Up Short

Mercer County fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Illini West on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Chargers by a score of 4-3. The Golden Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Chargers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Tannen Whitehall was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. He also got a hit, marking his first of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Mercer County and nudges their season record down to 3-2. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Illini West, the win keeps they at an undefeated 5-0.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mercer County will take on Knoxville at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Illini West, they will face off against Clark County at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
