Basketball Recap: Sandhills Valley Comes Up Short

Sandhills Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their 23rd straight loss dating back to last season. They were dealt a 78-23 defeat at the hands of the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mavericks of the 54-4 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Avery Weems was Sandhills Valley's leading scorer, having posted nine points. Weems also led the team in assists with two.

Taryn Arbuthnot was nothing short of spectacular for Sumner-Eddyville-Miller: she almost dropped a double-double on 30 points and nine rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Arbuthnot has scored at least a third of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller's points. Another player making a difference was Jaycelyn Hoos, who went 9 of 12 en route to 23 points, to go along with six boards and four steals.

Sandhills Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sandhills Valley will take on Sutherland on Thursday. As for Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, they will square off against Elm Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
