Game recap: Gold Beach High School Football Team takes down Coquille

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - After two lead changes, Gold Beach (Ore.) took the lead for good when CJ Maxwell thew a touchdown to Dennis Dykstra with 11:00 remaining in the fifth quarter and held on to beat Coquille (Ore.) 26-20 on Saturday.

After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Matt Miranda, the Red Devils went into halftime with a 14-6 lead. The Panthers took the lead for good with a Maxwell touchdown pass to Dykstra in the fifth quarter.

Despite scoring zero points in the third, Gold Beach still trailed by 8 points going into the fourth quarter. But eight points in the fourth helped GB pull out the victory.

Coquille's Sye Yates played well. The senior ran for two touchdowns and kicked one extra point. His performance brought his touchdown total to 10 on the year.

The Panthers' most effective player was Maxwell. The junior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.



When the two teams played each other last season, Gold Beach came away with a 28-19 victory.

The defeat comes as a step back for Coquille, which notched a 47-6 victory over Bandon/Pacific in its previous outing. With the win GB extended its winning streak to four games.

Gold Beach (6-3) goes up against Bandon/Pacific in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Coquille (5-3) locks horns with Reedsport in a 3A Sunset game.
