Basketball Recap: Carrollton Takes a Loss

Carrollton fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Marquette Catholic on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 52-51 to the Marquette Catholic Explorers. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Hawks came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 95th, while the Explorers are ranked 252nd).

When it comes to explaining why Carrollton lost, don't look at Lauren Flowers. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayden Mcmurtrie, who posted seven points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Carrollton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 26 consecutive contests.

Carrollton's defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 19-7. As for Marquette Catholic, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 16-9.

Carrollton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 63-45 win against Nokomis on the 1st. As for Marquette Catholic, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 41-28 loss against Calhoun/Brussels on the 1st.
