Rossville and Carroll are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Hornets are taking a road trip to challenge the Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Rossville's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Carroll's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Rossville had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the nine-run drubbing they dealt Sheridan on Tuesday. The Hornets were the clear victors by a 10-1 margin over the Blackhawks. The Hornets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by seven runs or more this season.
Rossville let AJ Kelley and Evan Mcdonald run wild. Kelley went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Mcdonald went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Kelley a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Levi Darnell, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Rossville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sheridan only posted an OBP of .214.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 14 runs the game before, Carroll was a bit more limited in their game on Wednesday. They fell just short of Sheridan by a score of 4-2. The loss continues a trend for the Cougars in their meetings with the Blackhawks: they've now lost three in a row.
Xavier Williams made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Carroll's defeat dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Rossville, their victory bumped their record up to 13-4.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Rossville has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .444. However, it's not like Carroll struggles in that department as they've averaged .442. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Rossville came out on top in a nail-biter against Carroll in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
