The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs will take on the Providence Day Chargers at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Cardinal Gibbons will aim to continue their five-game streak of scoring more runs each matchup than the last.
Cardinal Gibbons is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Bishop Snyder 11-1 on Saturday. The Chiefs not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 8, 2024.
Cardinal Gibbons let Randy Petron and Kendrick Julmis run wild. Petron went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Julmis scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-2. That home run was Petron's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cam Rizzi, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Cardinal Gibbons always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Providence Day fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against ABF Academy Homestead on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bandits by a score of 16-15. The Chargers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Providence Day got a massive performance out of Austin Ward, who scored two runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances. Ward is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played. Jack Rivera was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-5.
Cardinal Gibbons has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. Providence Day's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cardinal Gibbons has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Providence Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Cardinal Gibbons was able to grind out a solid victory over Providence Day in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, winning 12-7. Does Cardinal Gibbons have another victory up their sleeve, or will Providence Day turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
