Baseball Game Preview: Great Oak Wolfpack vs. Bonita Bearcats

The Great Oak Wolfpack will take on the Bonita Bearcats in a tournament on Wednesday. Great Oak has now lost eight straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since February 17.

On Saturday, Great Oak didn't have quite enough to beat Torrance and fell 4-2. That's two games in a row now that the Wolfpack have lost by exactly two runs.

Great Oak saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gavin Fien, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Wes Shanabarger also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Bonita). They were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over Claremont on Saturday. Considering the Bearcats have won four contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Bonita also got a great performance from Daniel Nageer as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Joaquin Covarrubias was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Judah Reeve, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI.

Bonita is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. Great Oak's loss dropped their record down to 1-8.

Great Oak was able to grind out a solid victory over Bonita in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 7-2. Will Great Oak repeat their success, or does Bonita has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
