Baseball Recap: Gary West Side Takes a Loss

Gary West Side had lost 15 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-11 to make it 16. They came up short against the Hammond Morton Governors, falling 11-0. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.

As for Hammond Morton, their record is now 10-13. Considering they have won eight games by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

For Hammond Morton's part, Alex Rodriguez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Rodriguez has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gerard Garnett, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Hammond Morton: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-12 otherwise. Hector Villegas also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gary West Side will face off against 21st Century Charter at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. 21st Century Charter has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 19.14 runs per game on average), something Gary West Side will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Hammond Morton, they will square off against Hammond Central at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Governors' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolves have averaged an impressive 8.5 runs per game this season.
