Beyond the Record Book: Receiving Records

Justin Sawmiller of Kenton is on the verge of breaking the national receptions record, but his single season totals are not in the national record book.

Sometime in the next few weeks, Justin Sawmiller of Kenton (Ohio) will become the nation's all-time career leader in receptions. However, none of his fantastic statistical outputs from his junior and sophomore seasons can be found in the National Federation of High Schools Record Book.

Sawmiller had 137 receptions during his sophomore season and followed it up with 128 catches during his junior season. Both numbers should rank among the nation's all-time reception totals for a single season.

However, Sawmiller is not the only high school receiver whose stats have not found their way into the national record book. Through research of high school state association record books, the MaxPreps leaderboards and other state football record websites, MaxPreps has come up with 81 marks that should be included for either single season receptions, single season receiving yardage or single season receiving touchdowns.

Once again, we encourage all coaches to contact the National Federation of High Schools and submit the proper paperwork so that their record-breaking athletes can be recognized.

Using the minimum required totals from the NFHS Record Book, here's a list of all of the missing marks. The lists from the NFHS record book can be found by clicking the category link. We've also included the other state association websites and state record book website locations.
