League recap: Union Grove climbs in state rankings with win

AAAAA Region 4A recap Oct. 3, 2012

Union Grove moved up to 113 from 171 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in AAAAA Region 4A. The Wolverines climbed the ranks as a result of a 23-0 win over Northgate.

Union Grove made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,879 from 4,432. The advance stemmed from a 23-0 victory over the Vikings last week.

Mundy's Mill's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Rodricous Gates threw for 106 yards and Eric Tate had 56 yards receiving. On the ground Rodney Smith chipped in 154 yards. Smith helped Mundy's Mill's passing attack out by catching one ball for 19 yards.

Justin Hines made the biggest impact on defense this week as Forest Park lost to Whitewater. The freshman recorded one fumble.

Mundy's Mill's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Gates has thrown for 279 yards and one touchdown this season, while Tate has nine catches for 151 yards. Smith leads the league in rushing with 496 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Wolverines take on Ola. Union Grove is currently in first, while the Mustangs are in third.
