Baseball Recap: Gateway Takes a Loss

Gateway had lost eight straight at home dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 2-11 to make it nine. They lost 17-2 to the San Francisco Waldorf Wolverines. If the Gators were looking for revenge after losing 9-3 to the Wolverines when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Gil Passman-Lapushin made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases and one run. Valentino Montoya also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

As for San Francisco Waldorf, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-8 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On San Francisco Waldorf's side, Emiliano Martinez-Ortiz made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Martinez-Ortiz has become a key player for San Francisco Waldorf: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 1-7 otherwise. Martinez-Ortiz was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Appel, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. San Francisco Waldorf is 4-2 when Appel posts two or more runs, but 0-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Ben Sarig, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

While Gateway had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
