Basketball Recap: Covington Comes Up Short

Covington lost against Meridian last Tuesday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Covington Owls fell just short of the Meridian Yellowjackets by a score of 41-38. While losing is never fun, the Owls can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 880th, while the Yellowjackets are ranked 318th).

Meridian found their leader in sophomore Josh Nunez, who posted 23 points along with six rebounds and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Nunez has scored all season. Guillermo Ortiz was another key player, putting up seven points and five rebounds.

Covington's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Meridian, the win keeps them at an undefeated 9-0.

Covington and Mount Calm will face off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday without much rest having both just played. As for Meridian, it'll be a Battle of the Bugs the Meridian Yellowjackets take on the Irion County Hornets at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Meridian is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.4 points per game this season.
