The St. Mary Vikings will face off against the Mayfield Cardinals at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. St. Mary is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.5 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for St. Mary after they put the first runs on the board on Wednesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Graves County by a score of 5-4. The loss was the Vikings' first of the season.
Luke Sims was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Mayfield came up short against Ballard Memorial last Tuesday, falling 14-3. The Cardinals haven't had much luck with the Bombers recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.
Carson Price was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Price was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. He also hit two doubles, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, Kyler Simpson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 2-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
Mayfield's loss dropped their record down to 3-5. As for St. Mary, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 9-1.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. St. Mary hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .358. However, it's not like Mayfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .319. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went St. Mary's way against Mayfield in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as St. Mary made off with a 14-1 victory. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cardinals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
