Baseball Game Preview: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Clairemont Chieftains

Otay Ranch is a perfect 3-0 against Clairemont since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Otay Ranch Mustangs will venture away from home to challenge the Clairemont Chieftains at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Otay Ranch is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Morse with a sharp 9-2 victory on Wednesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Otay Ranch got a great performance from Sebastian Magana as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Aidan Galicia was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. That stolen base marked the first that he snagged this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Fernando Tovalin, who scored a run.

Meanwhile, Clairemont put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They had just enough and edged out Mater Dei Catholic 4-2.

Clairemont saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bo Osland, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

The victory made it two in a row for Otay Ranch and bumps their season record up to 4-2-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Clairemont, their record now sits at 3-0.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Otay Ranch has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Clairemont struggles in that department as they've been averaging 11.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Otay Ranch came out on top in a nail-biter against Clairemont when the teams last played back in March of 2022, sneaking past 5-3. Will Otay Ranch repeat their success, or does Clairemont have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
