Mother Nature played havoc with Idaho's 5A state tournament, forcing the event to be changed from double elimination to single elimination and three locations to complete. It took No. 1 Eagle three days to complete its 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Coeur d'Alene, before winning the title against Rocky Mountain (Meridian), 5-2.

The tournament started in Idaho Falls on Friday with eight teams, was moved to Blackfoot on Saturday with hopes of salvaging the eight-team format and ended up with four teams playing Sunday in Meridian, a Boise suburb. The heavy rains also forced the format to be trimmed with quarterfinal games turning into semifinals.

Pitchers Bradie Fillmore and Autumn Moffat combined for a ho-hitter in the title game after Fillmore struck out 15 against CDA in the semifinals.



The changed format limited Eagle's chances of setting a national single-season home run record. After hitting three in the tournament opener, the Mustangs were at 66 with three games to play – potentially four – and needing five to tie the National Federation of State High School Associations record of 71, held by Pisgah (Ala.).

Eagle concluded the season with 22 run-rule victories (including 19-3 over Mountain View in the state touranament opener), 378 runs and only 26 runs allowed. Of the 29 victories, 18 were shutouts. Over the last two seasons, Eagle is 59-1 and owns a 34-game win streak.

With four weeks remaining in the Xcellent 25, it remains to be seen if Eagle will be able to hold off fast-charging and once-beaten Grand Terrace and Crown Point – two teams that have played arguably stronger schedules.

Grand Terrace, winner of 21 straight, moved up a spot to No. 2. Crown Point is No. 3. Grand Terrace pitchers Melanie Olmos and Yesenia Morrison have allowed just 39 hits this season. And Crown Point has won 11 straight.

New to the Top 25 are unbeatens Puyallup (Wash.), Fitch (Groton, Conn.) and state large school champions Bentonville (Ark.) and Campbell (Ewa Beach, Hawaii).

1. (last week No. 1) Eagle (Idaho), 29-0 *Season over
The Mustangs defeated Mountain View (Meridian), 5-2, to win their second-straight 5A state title and finish the season 29-0.

2. (2) Grand Terrace (Calif.), 24-1
Four players drove in two runs each as Grand Terrace opened the playoffs with a 10-0 win over Peninsula (Rolling Hills Estates). Averaging 10 runs per game, Grand Terrace has allowed just 19 and has won 22 in a row as 10 different players have homered since an early 1-0 loss.

3. (3) Crown Point (Ind.), 26-1
The Bulldogs got another no-hit performance from senior Miranda Elish, as she struck 13 in 4-0 win over Marist, one of the top teams in Illinois. Alexis Holloway followed with a one-hit, 15-strikeout effort in a 2-0 win over 16-7 Harrison. And Elish struck out 13 in a four-hitter over Harrison, 6-1. She is 14-1 on the season with a 0.42 ERA and averaging two strikeouts per inning.

4. (4) Los Alamitos (Calif.), 24-2
The Griffins opened the playoffs with a win over Woodrow Wilson (Long Beach), 7-3, as Mary Iakopo homered and Brianna Jewett ran her record to 7-0. Next up is 15-10 Chino on Tuesday.

5. (5) West Orange (Winter Garden, Fla.), 30-1 *Season over
Won Florida's 9A state title.



6. (10) Curry (Jasper, Ala.), 47-2 *Season over
Seniors Ashlee Swindle (.557, 86 RBIs, 13 homers, 45-2, 0.59 ERA, 385 strikeouts), Justus Perry (.560, 14 homers, 59 RBIs), Kaylee Horton (.574, 73 runs, 85 hits) and Emily Aaron (.511, 49 RBIs, 25 doubles) concluded their careers with 21 straight victories as the Yellowjackets captured the 4A state title.

7. (7) La Grange (Texas), 37-2
The Leopards ended Robinson's perfect season with a sweep (4-1, 11-1) in the 4A state quarterfinals. Seniors Amber Loehr (8 home runs, 56 RBIs) and Blake-Ann Fritsch (.550, 71 hits, 57 runs, 37 steals) are having stellar seasons. Senior pitcher Missy Zoch is 29-2 with a 0.55 ERA and 298 strikeouts (191 innings).

8. (8) Bald Knob (Ark.), 36-0
The Bulldogs defeated Rose Bud 1-0 to win their third-straight state 3A title and improved their win streak to 60. In the championship game, senior Autumn Humes (30-0 with 295 strikeouts) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 12 and scored the game's only run after doubling in the first inning.

9. (9) East Carter (Grayson, Ky.), 30-0
The Raiders beat Boyd County 3-2 in eight innings, as sophomore standout Montana Fouts allowed a season-high four base hits. The Raiders followed that by routing Elliott County (Sandy Hook) 15-0 in the District 62 tournament opener. Fouts is 26-0 and has allowed just 20 base hits this season.

10. (16) Etiwanda (Calif.), 29-2
Vanessa Taukeiaho and Megan Stevens hit their 20th and 19th round-trippers of the season. Wheeler improved to 18-0. The Eagles have hit 65 home runs this season – six off the national high school record of 71.

11. (11) Bishop Carroll (Wichita, Kan.), 22-0
The Golden Eagles routed Arkansas City 15-0 and Great Bend 10-0. Maddie Miller homered in each game to give her 12 on the season. Up next is the postseason.



12. (12) Gainesville (Fla.), 28-2 *Season over
Gainesville won Florida's 7A title.

13. (13) Orange Lutheran (Calif.), 27-3
The Lancers got home runs and nine RBIs from Alisen Endsley and Lauren Espalin to beat Los Altos, 11-1, in the CIF playoff opener. Up next is 20-8 Cypress on Tuesday.

14. (14) Cape Fear (Fayetteville, N.C.), 27-0
The Colts routed Apex 10-0 to move into the state 4A semifinals and will play 26-2 Conway in a best-of-three series starting Tuesday.

15. (15) Sherwood (Sandy Spring, Md.), 18-0
After recording two more shutouts (giving it 14 this season), Sherwood's winning streak sits at 102.

16. (17) La Habra (Calif.), 27-1
The Highlanders opened the playoffs with a 10-0 win over Arroyo Grande and have won 24 straight since losing to No. 14 Orange Lutheran on March 10. Up next is 17-6 Redlands East Valley on Tuesday.

17. (NR) Puyallup (Wash.), 25-0
The Vikings, averaging more than 10 runs per game, open state 4A tournament play on Friday.



18. (18) Lakewood (Hebron, Ohio), 25-0
After allowing just one run in its previous eight games, Lakewood needed 11 to beat Mt. Vernon (Ohio), 11-7. The team then defeated Caledonia River Valley 8-2 to advance to Thursday's D-2 Region 7 finals against Sheridan (Thornville).

19. (23) Downers Grove South (Ill.), 32-3
The Mustangs defeated four teams last week and have won 10 straight since splitting with No. 3 Crown Point.

20. (20) Neshoba Central (Philadelphia, Miss.), 27-1 *Season over
Neshoba Central won the 5A state title and ended the season with 22 straight wins.

21. (21) Ironwood Ridge (Tucson, Ariz.), 35-4 *Season over
The Nighthawks captured the Arizona D-2 state title, winning 20 of their last 21 games.

22. (NR) Campbell (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), 18-1
Campbell repeated as state champ and its only blip on the schedule was a 5-4 loss to Kapolei, the team it routed in the state championship, 12-2. After losing, Campbell outscored its final five opponents 46-7.

23. (NR) Bentonville (Ark.), 27-1
The Tigers routed defending state champion North Little Rock for the Arkansas 7A title and finished the season with 19 straight wins. Their lone loss was 2-1 to VanBuren (18-7) on April 2.



24. (NR) Fitch (Groton, Conn.), 20-0
Led by senior pitcher Caroline Taber, the Falcons ended the regular season 20-0. Taber (signed with Princeton) has 14 shutouts.

25. (25) Union Grove (Wis.), 21-1
Union Grove opens district play on Friday.
