Baseball Recap: Marquette Catholic Takes Down East Alton-Wood River in a Playoff Battle

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Marquette Catholic had no problem doing just that on Monday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the East Alton-Wood River Oilers a 10-0 shutout. Considering the Explorers' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

Joe Stephan made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Will Fahnestock was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Tyler Roth was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Marquette Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .517. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as East Alton-Wood River only posted an OBP of .348.

Marquette Catholic's win bumped their record up to 17-15. As for East Alton-Wood River, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-21.
