Basketball Recap: Wetumpka Now 12-1 over Last 13 Games

Wetumpka lost to Stanhope Elmore last Thursday, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The Wetumpka Indians came out on top against the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs by a score of 62-54. Given the Indians' advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 131st, while the Mustangs are ranked 273rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Wetumpka's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nolan Fitch led the charge by going 5 for 9 on his way to 18 points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Tom Suddith, who posted eight points along with 14 boards and six blocks.

Wetumpka smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 18 consecutive contests.

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Terrance Collins, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds. Collins has been hot, having posted nine or more boards the last six times he's played. Jaden Burns also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Wetumpka is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.5 points per game. As for Stanhope Elmore, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-11.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wetumpka will challenge Montgomery Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Stanhope Elmore, they will face off against Percy Julian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Stanhope Elmore is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65.6 points per game this season.
