Aaron Cortez Delivers Best Effort of Season

Mercedes was led to victory by Aaron Cortez, who turned in his biggest game of the season on Friday. Cortez rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns, and also threw for 70 yards and a touchdown, good enough to set a new career-high in rushing yards in the process.

The victory (which was Mercedes' fifth in a row) raised their record to 8-3. Cortez and Mercedes will take on Alamo Heights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Sanchez Came Up Big in Mercedes' 45-20 Win

Robert Sanchez's big game helped extend Mercedes's winning streak to five on Friday. Sanchez did his part (and then some), rushing for 206 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.6 yards per carry for the 'W'. His rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his fifth straight game with at least 118 rushing yards.

Sharyland's probably not too fond of Sanchez given he always seems to get the better of them. When Sanchez last faced the Rattlers back in September, he rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.9 yards per carry, and also caught a touchdown.

Eddie Slovak's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Lopez over Pioneer

Eddie Slovak continued his hot streak on Friday by dropping his ninth-straight game with at least 110 rushing yards. He rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

This season, Slovak has averaged 25.7 receiving yards per game. It gets even more impressive: after nine games last season, he was only averaging 112.89 rushing yards per game. This year he is averaging 173.33 rushing yards.

A Season-Best Performance from Matthew Cano Leads Edcouch-Elsa over Mission Veterans Memorial

On Friday, Edcouch-Elsa got the W thanks in part to Matthew Cano playing the best football he has all season. Cano wasn't messing around, making 15 total tackles and defending three passes in addition to snagging an interception which he returned one-yard for a touchdown. The game was his seventh straight with seven or more total tackles.

Mission Veterans Memorial had to have seen this coming; the last time they saw Cano it was a similar story. When Cano last faced the Patriots back in September, he made 11 total tackles and snagged an interception.
