Montague is 8-2 against Mason County Central since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Wildcats will host the Spartans at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Montague is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Calvin Christian just ended the team's eight-game winning streak on Saturday. They lost 18-10 to the Squires. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Wildcats have suffered since March 21st.
Eli Petersen was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Degan, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
While Mason County Central didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Holton with a sharp 11-1 victory on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won five contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Pierce Bladzik was incredible, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Peyton Merz, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Mason County Central was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
The win made it two in a row for Mason County Central and bumps their season record up to 7-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for Montague, their loss dropped their record down to 8-5-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Montague has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mason County Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Montague's way against Mason County Central in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Montague made off with a 17-5 win. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
