Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Montbello). They blew past Denver North, posting a 61-21 win. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded the Warriors with their most commanding win of the season.
Montbello's win came from a few key players Thomas Jefferson will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Angel Chavez, who threw for 352 yards and six TDs while completing 81.2% of his passes. His passing game has become a key predictor of Montbello's success: the team is 2-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-5 otherwise. The Warriors' leading receiver Zyaire Custis was Chavez's top target yet again, picking up 130 receiving yards and three scores.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Montbello, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Jaden Houston, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
Montbello didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Marcus Johnson and Tru Neal. Johnson is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made six or more in each of the last three games he's played.
Thomas Jefferson now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Montbello, their record now sits at 3-6.
Everything came up roses for Thomas Jefferson against Montbello when the teams last played back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 59-14 victory. In that contest, the Spartans amassed a halftime lead of 38-14, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
