Basketball Game Preview: Gaston Christian Eagles vs. Asheville Christian Academy Lions

The Gaston Christian Eagles are taking a road trip to face off against the Asheville Christian Academy Lions at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Gaston Christian's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last seven contests.

Gaston Christian is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They strolled past Asheville School (Independent) with points to spare, taking the game 64-49. The Eagles haven't had any issues with the Blues recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

It was another big night for Cameron Newman, who posted 25 points in addition to seven steals and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Giannis Katsoulas, who put up ten points and three steals.

Gaston Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Asheville Christian Academy was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 64-59 to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Lions came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 41st in North Carolina, while the Eagles are ranked 147th in Georgia).

Gaston Christian pushed their record up to 24-7 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.8 points over those games. As for Asheville Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-7.

Gaston Christian came up short against Asheville Christian Academy when the teams last played back in November of 2024, falling 60-54. Can Gaston Christian avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
