Flag Football Recap: Alexsandra Arce-Marquez and Clarissa Canastillo Pace Sunnyside Defense

Sunnyside fell victim to Xavier College Prep and their airtight defense on Thursday. They received a blow as they fell 14-0 to the Gators. The Blue Devils have been going strong on the season, but this is now their second defeat in a row.

Sunnyside didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Alexsandra Arce-Marquez and Clarissa Canastillo. Canastillo also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 11.

A big part of Xavier College Prep's win came down to the chemistry between Ana Matuz and her top target Evie Maas. Matuz threw for 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Maas picked up 96 receiving yards and two TDs. The dominant performance also gave Matuz a new career-high in rushing yards (44).

Sunnyside's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Xavier College Prep, they pushed their record up to 9-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Sunnyside didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 17-15 win against Tucson High Magnet School on the 4th. As for Xavier College Prep, they have also already played their next matchup, a 41-25 defeat against Desert Vista on the 4th.
