Baseball Recap: Varnado Takes a Loss

Varnado had lost nine straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-14 to make it ten. They lost 13-2 to the Bogalusa Lumberjacks. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Lumberjacks this season, with their most recent loss being a 13-1 defeat back in February.

As for Bogalusa, the win got them back to even at 12-12. The result was nothing new for the Lumberjacks, who have now won 11 matchups by 11 runs or more so far this season.

For Bogalusa's part, Douarich Peterson made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. Those 11 strikeouts gave Peterson a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Bogalusa's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 5-12 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Lemaj Levi was a standout: he went 1-for-2 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. Bogalusa is undefeated when Levi posts two or more stolen bases, but 9-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Byren Reed, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

While Varnado had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
