MaxPreps Top 25 Southern California high school football rankings

Many of the best teams in Southern California took the week off, and that left little movement in the rankings.

But Alemany's loss to Norco was certainly the biggest rumbling, and St. Bonaventure's loss to Westlake booted the Seraphs. In comes JSerra Catholic, and that means the entire Trinity League is in the SoCal Top 25.

Is it justified? Well, through computations using MaxPreps Computer Rankings, we determined the toughest leagues in the state - and the Trinity League was No. 1. Click here to read the story and see if your favorite league made the cut.

MaxPreps Top 25 Southern California High School Football Rankings

1. (1 last week) St. John Bosco (Bellflower), 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 1 state, 6 national, 4 Xcellent 25

The Braves won 75-35 over Crenshaw with an offensive explosion and Josh Rosen celebrated his return from a three- week absence with five touchdown passes, including a 55-yarder to Jaleel Wadood on the first play from scrimmage, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram. It was 38-7 at the half and didn't get much better for Crenshaw. The Trinity League schedule is finally here and the Braves will face Santa Margarita Friday at Saddleback College.

2. (2) Mater Dei (Santa Ana), 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 4 state, 19 national, 20 Xcellent 25

The Monarchs had a bye and will kick off their Trinity League slate by battling Servite at Angels Stadium. Coach Bruce Rollinson will be honored before the game, celebrating his years of service at Mater Dei as a player and a coach.

3. (3) Serra (Gardena), 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Western), State II
Ranks: 2 state, 8 national, 22 Xcellent 25



The Cavaliers had the week off but moved into the Xcellent 25, a place they spent time at earlier this season as well. They head to Harvard-Westlake on Friday to kick off the Mission League schedule.

4. (5) Mission Viejo, 6-0
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 7 state, 32 national

The Diablos keep on scoring, and keep on winning. They moved to 6-0 with a 47-21 triumph over Redlands East Valley, but had to wait until the third quarter to get a comfortable lead, as it was 20-14 at the half. Alex Suchesk ran for 148 yards and Ian Fieber passed for 214 yards and a score, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise. Next up is San Clemente to open the South Coast League schedule.

5. (6) Long Beach Poly, 5-1
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 13 state, 70 national

The Jackrabbits were involved in a major Moore League mismatch at winless Compton Friday, winning 54-0. They led 34-0 after one quarter and then led 47-0 at the half. Poly scored on the opening kickoff and Compton fumbled the opening snap, then Poly scored on a James Brooks rush. Poly will host Jordan (Long Beach) on Friday.

6. (7) Hart (Newhall), 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Northern), State II
Ranks: 5 state, 25 national



The Indians had to fight back from a deficit at Santa Monica, as they trailed 14-0 before rifling off 26 unanswered to win 26-14. Brady White ran in a 30-yard touchdown to tie the game with 11:40 left in the game, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Chase White returned an interception 46 yards to give Hart the lead, and Trent Irwin caught four passes for 103 yards and a score. The Indians go to West Ranch Friday to begin Foothill League play, and star running back Connor Wingenroth will sit out to nurse a shoulder injury.

7. (8) Chaminade (West Hills), 4-1
Classifications: Southern (Western), State II
Ranks: 6 state, 27 national

The Eagles won one of the year's best big-name games when they dispatched Notre Dame, 46-43. It was a back-and-forth battle that ended with Notre Dame missing a field goal at the buzzer. Donovan Lee was spectacular with five touchdowns, and 214 yards as well. He scored the winning TD with less than a minute left. There were six lead changes in the second half. The Eagles go to Cathedral to begin Mission League play on Friday.

8. (10) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village), 5-1
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 8 state, 38 national

The Lions got Marmonte League play started in about the best way possible, thrashing Thousand Oaks 63-7. Brandon Dawkins completed 17 of his 20 passes, and Damon (DJ) Riggins rushed in for three scores. They head to Agoura this Friday, and are very unlikely to see a challenge until the Marmonte League title game.

9. (4) Alemany (Mission Hills), 5-1
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 11 state, 47 national



The Warriors' foray into the national rankings was a short one, as Norco came out and stuck them with a 38-27 loss. Norco was ranked in these rankings to start the season then fell on hard times early, but on Friday the Cougars led 14-0 at the half and never trailed. Alemany got to within three points in the final three minutes thanks to a Dominic Davis rushing score but that was as close as the Warriors got. They allowed more than 400 rushing yards as well. Alemany will look to get back on track Friday at home against Loyola to open Serra League play.

10. (9) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), 4-2
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 12 state, 56 national

The Knights lost 46-43 to Chaminade, as you can see above. They've lost to Serra in double overtime and lost to Chaminade in a game that came down to the last seconds. If prep football games were 47 minutes long instead of 48, they could be undefeated. Koa Farmer scored four touchdowns, Daniel Khan dove for a 28-yard scoring catch and Chris Colarossi ran for 122 yards. They host Bishop Amat in Serra League play on Friday.

11. (12) Centennial (Corona), 3-2
Classifications: Southern (Inland), State I
Ranks: 25 state, 146 national

The Huskies had the week off. They host Norco in the Big VIII opener on Friday.

12. (13) Mission Hills (San Marcos), 5-0
Classifications: San Diego (Open), State II
Ranks: 16 state, 92 national



The Grizzlies took the week off and still lead the UT San Diego poll. They host 2-3 Escondido in the Avocado East League opener on Friday.

13. (11) Servite (Anaheim), 3-2
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 19 state, 110 national

The Friars had to face De La Salle and lost 35-10. That's not all too uncommon - De La Salle doesn't lose to many teams, period. Eleven times since the beginning of the 2004 season, to be exact. Travis Waller the runner was held in check with 12 runs for 42 yards, whereas Travis Waller the passer was 12-for-24 for 127 yards. Jalen Motley and Aidan Carty each recovered fumbles. Now comes the Trinity League, and it will be Servite vs. Mater Dei at Angels Stadium on Friday.

14. (14) Edison (Fresno), 5-0
Classifications: Central (I), State I
Ranks: 12 state, 51 national

The Tigers had the week off. They head to Sanger on Friday to begin league play.

15. (15) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), 4-1
Classifications: San Diego (I), State I
Ranks: 15 state, 91 national



The Dons were locked in a 7-7 tie with Morse (San Diego) at the half, then trailed 13-7 before dominating the rest of the way to win 42-13. Chris Moliga stepped up when his team needed him, racking up three touchdowns in the second half, and Clayton Dale passed for one in addition to running for one. The UT San Diego poll has the Dons fifth in their section - we obviously feel Cathedral Catholic is better than teams like Oceanside, Ramona and Eastlake. They host Scripps Ranch in Eastern League play on Friday.

16. (16) Rancho Cucamonga, 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Inland), State I
Ranks: 14 state, 79 national

The Cougars had the week off and start the Baseline League schedule against Etiwanda on Thursday,

17. (17) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta), 4-1
Classifications: Southern (Inland), State I
Ranks: 20 state, 111 national

The Broncos blasted Crespi 42-2, getting back to what they were doing in their first three games. Coltin Gerhart ran 12 times for 200 yards and four touchdowns and only had to pass six times. Darryl Denby caught a scoring pass. Eight tackles for loss and three sacks highlighted the defense's night. The Southwestern League schedule starts Friday against Temecula Valley.

18. (19) Bishop Amat (La Puente), 5-1
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 22 state, 127 national



The Lancers are ahead of Clovis North now in the state rankings so get a slight bump after beating Culver City 48-26.

19. (18) Clovis North (Fresno), 4-1
Classifications: Central (I), State I
Ranks: 23 state, 137 national

The Broncos took the week off and will host Clovis West in the Tri-River League opener on Friday.

20. (20) Orange Lutheran, 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 27 state, 175 national

The Lancers had the week off and will face JSerra Catholic in the Trinity League opener on Friday.

21. (23) Bakersfield, 3-2
Classifications: Central (I), State I
Ranks: 36 state, 236 national



The Drillers did not play. They have a huge matchup this week at Frontier (Bakersfield) to open Southwestern Yosemite League play. Frontier is 5-0 and ranked only three spots behind Bakersfield in our state rankings.

22. (22) San Pasqual (Escondido), 5-0
Classifications: San Diego (I), State I
Ranks: 40 state, 255 national

The Golden Eagles are still golden after a bye. They begin the Avocado East League slate on Friday vs. Fallbrook, and are scheduled to go to Mission Hills the next week. UT San Diego has San Pasqual as its No. 2 team.

23. (23) Oceanside, 3-2
Classifications: San Diego (Open), State II
Ranks: 26 state, 163 national

The Pirates head to Carslbad to begin Avocado West League play on Friday. They did not play last week.

24. (NR) JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano), 5-0
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 21 state, 114 national



The Lions are 5-0 - just like they were last year in what turned out to be a 6-4 campaign. But the wins on their schedule are certainly solid, and they had a much easier win against Trabuco Hills than Santa Margarita did, winning 37-15. Casey Eugenio rushed 27 times for 121 yards and a score, and Dante Pettis caught five passes for 52 yards and a score. Their game Friday against Orange Lutheran will likely knock the loser out of these rankings for the rest of the season, so lots is at stake in the Trinity League opener.

25. (25) Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), 3-2
Classifications: Southern (Pac 5), State I
Ranks: 33 state, 203 national

The Eagles had a bye and will host St. John Bosco on Friday - a chance to knock off the top team in the rankings.
