Basketball Recap: Hailey Hurt Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Gentry

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Holmes County Central's strategy against Gentry on Friday. The Holmes County Central Jaguars walked away with a 49-36 victory over the Gentry Rams. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 54-41 back in January.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Holmes County Central to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hailey Hurt, who posted nine points in addition to seven boards and five assists. What's more, Hurt also racked up five steals, the most she's had since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Ratasia Greer, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds.

Hurt wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Holmes County Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gentry only posted six assists.

Gentry's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zion Brown, who earned eight points and 14 boards. Brown is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Za'Kensly Yarbor was another key player, putting up ten points and three steals.

Holmes County Central's win bumped their record up to 11-12. As for Gentry, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season.

Holmes County Central has already played their next game, a 47-44 victory against Yazoo City on the 28th. As for Gentry, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 43-28 win against Greenville on the 28th.
