Baseball Recap: Hawthorne Comes Up Short

Hawthorne extended their losing streak to three on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 6-5 in the process. They came up short against the Wood-Ridge Blue Devils, falling 15-5. That's two games in a row now that the Bears have lost by exactly ten runs.

As for Wood-Ridge, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-7. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Wood-Ridge's part, Jack Caprio made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Caprio is becoming a predictor of Wood-Ridge's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is 3-1 (and 5-6 when he doesn't). Caprio was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

In other batting news, Wood-Ridge got a massive performance out of Lucas Mendoza, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. The Blue Devils are undefeated when Mendoza posts two or more runs, but 3-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Nick Scalera, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Coming up, Hawthorne will face off against Glen Rock at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Panthers' pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so the Bears' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Wood-Ridge, they will take on Lodi at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
