Softball Recap: Smethport Comes Up Short

Smethport extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 2-6. They lost 13-0 to the Port Allegany Gators. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Gators this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-2 back in March.

As for Port Allegany, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 7-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games.

For Port Allegany's part, Bria Willcox was a major factor no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Willcox has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2025.

In other batting news, Port Allegany let Addison Taylor and Brynn Evens run wild. Taylor went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Evens went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Evens is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games she's played. Breah Fillhart was another key player, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Smethport will take on Coudersport at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Port Allegany, they will face off against Galeton at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 20 runs per game on average), something the Gators will no doubt try to take advantage of.
