Baseball Recap: Wheeling Takes a Loss

Wheeling had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 7-6 to make it five. They took a 10-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Palatine Pirates. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 8-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Palatine, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.

For Palatine's part, Ian Sherman made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Sherman has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Toby Peterson, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-4. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Jett Greiwe was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wheeling will face off against Wauconda at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Palatine, they will take on Dundee-Crown at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
