Baseball Recap: Downingtown East Comes Up Short

Downingtown East had lost three straight at home, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 11-8 to make it four. They came up short against the Bishop Shanahan Eagles, falling 9-2. The Cougars were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 5-3.

As for Bishop Shanahan, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-8. They not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since April 14th (when they won 11-1).

For Bishop Shanahan's part, Cole Simmons spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits. Simmons also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Eagles are 5-2 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-6 otherwise.

At the plate, Brett Barber was excellent, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Michael Cleary was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one run and one double.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Downingtown East is set to square off against their familiar foe Coatesville at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Bishop Shanahan will challenge rival Henderson at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
