League recap: Sierra Linda stuns Moon Valley in upset

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Sierra Linda, who took down 127th ranked Moon Valley, 42-27.

Paradise Valley was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in III Section III. Earlier in the week, the Trojans triumphed over Washington 56-20.

Paradise Valley's dynamic duo of Ryan Finley and Jordan Brown proved tough for the Rams to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Finley threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns and Brown had 160 yards receiving. Carl Westlund helped Paradise Valley's passing attack out by catching four balls for 56 yards.

Clarence Smith was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 20 carries, he ran for 241 yards as Youngker defeated Washington. Teammate D'Angelo Calderon added to the ground attack by rushing for 51 yards.

Luke Rubenzer provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Saguaro fell to Desert Vista. He completed 19 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 124 yards. Rubenzer's favorite target this week was Christian Kirk, who caught seven passes for 119 yards.

6-foot-4 quarterback Finley of the Trojans is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1843. He has also thrown 19 touchdowns. On the ground, Thunderbird's Kani Benoit has rushed for 1060 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Massiah Smith. The Tempe star has 38 catches for 597 yards.

Paradise Valley's Finley is within 157 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Arcadia.

Desert Edge's Kyle Woolard is a mere 86 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Woolard has rushed for 914 yards on 93 carries so far this year.

A big matchup in III Section III this week will be when the Trojans take on the Titans. Paradise Valley is in fourth place, while Arcadia is in seventh place.

The Scorpions extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Agua Fria, 47-0. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
