Baseball Recap: Seventy-First Comes Up Short

Seventy-First was the 22-8 winner over E.E. Smith when they last played one another back in March of 2025, but their luck changed this time around. The Falcons fell just short of the Golden Bulls by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday. The Falcons' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Nasir Nelson put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Seventy-First's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-1 (and 1-7 when he doesn't).

Nelson wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Charles Gunnings Jr, who went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases. Seventy-First is 2-1 when Gunnings Jr posts two or more stolen bases, but 5-7 otherwise.

Seventy-First now has a losing record of 7-8. As for E.E. Smith, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-11.

Looking ahead, Seventy-First will take on Lumberton at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for E.E. Smith, they will challenge Durham School of the Arts at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed ten runs per game on average), something the Golden Bulls will no doubt try to take advantage of.
