Petoskey hasn't had much luck against Traverse City West recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Northmen will welcome the Titans at 4:00 p.m. Petoskey is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Petoskey got the win against St. Patrick by a conclusive 14-6. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Northmen.
Courtney Howard was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Those seven strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Alexis Cadarette and Cora Howard did most of the damage at the plate: Cadarette went 2-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Cora went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits Howard has posted since back in April. Bre VerCautren was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Petoskey hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Traverse City West was a bit more limited in their match on Friday. They came up short against Richmond, falling 16-2.
Traverse City West saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Delaney Witkop, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. That stolen base marked the first that Witkop has snagged this season.
Traverse City West has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Petoskey, their victory bumped their record up to 21-2.
Petoskey might still be hurting after the 10-0 defeat they got from Traverse City West when the teams last played back in May of 2023. Can the Northmen avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
