Basketball Game Preview: Alcona Tigers vs. Whittemore-Prescott Cardinals

Alcona has gone 9-1 against Whittemore-Prescott recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Alcona Tigers duke it out with the Whittemore-Prescott Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Alcona has eight straight wins, Whittemore-Prescott has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Last Tuesday, Alcona earned a 53-46 victory over Oscoda. Given the Tigers' advantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 198th, while the Owls are ranked 488th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Alcona to victory, but perhaps none more so than Garrett Somers, who went 6 of 12 on his way to 20 points along with five boards and four steals. Somers is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ricky Schott, who went 5 for 11 en route to 12 points and four steals.

Meanwhile, Whittemore-Prescott was beaten by Tawas Area 63-27 on Tuesday.

Alcona's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-2. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.4 points per game. As for Whittemore-Prescott, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-10.

Everything came up roses for Alcona against Whittemore-Prescott in their previous meeting back in January of 2024, as the squad secured a 55-25 victory. Does Alcona have another victory up their sleeve, or will Whittemore-Prescott turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
