Basketball Recap: Veterans Memorial Patriots vs. Seguin Matadors
The Veterans Memorial Patriots waltzed into their match on Tuesday with 23 straight wins but they left with 24. They walked away with a 70-58 victory over Seguin. Given Veterans Memorial's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 14th, while the Matadors are ranked 413th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Veterans Memorial was led to victory by Devin McCloud and Demarion Dennis. McCloud scored 14 points along with six rebounds and five assists, while Dennis scored 19 points along with six assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points McCloud has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Jionte Jones, who scored eight points along with three steals.
Several Matadors players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was John Jackson, who scored 24 points along with eight rebounds. That was a full 41.4% of Seguin's points, marking the tenth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Cameron Juarz-bruns was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with four steals.
Veterans Memorial's win was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 31-1. As for Seguin, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-15 record this season.
Veterans Memorial will be playing at home against the Thunderbirds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Wagner focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Tuesday. As for Seguin, they will head out on the road to face off against the Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Canyon is coming into the match on a five-game losing streak.
