Football Game Preview: Brearley Bears vs. Metuchen Bulldogs

The Brearley Bears will face off against the Metuchen Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Brearley lost a heartbreaker the last time they played South River, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's matchup. The Bears took their game on Friday with ease, bagging a 49-12 win over the Rams. Winning may never get old, but the Bears sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Metuchen). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat J.P. Stevens 53-0. The Bulldogs have beaten the Hawks the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Hawks has come to flipping the script.

Brearley better keep an eye on Cameron Hayes-Durina. He was instrumental in Metuchen's win, throwing for 316 yards and six TDs while completing 87% of his passes, and also rushing for 56 yards. What's more, Hayes-Durina racked up 148.1 passer rating, the most he's had since back in September of 2024. Metuchen's leading receiver Justus Leitner was Hayes-Durina's top target yet again, picking up 127 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Metuchen didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Gio Tan, Dennis Toth, Leitner, and Mateo Tan picked up one apiece.

Brearley now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Metuchen, they picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 3-4.
