Baseball Recap: Helix Victorious

While Helix's win against Grossmont wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Highlanders sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over the Foothillers on Thursday. The Highlanders have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Foothillers, too.

Helix got a great performance from Sean Sherrod as he pitched 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jake Johnson, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Helix is undefeated when Johnson posts two or more runs, but 8-10 otherwise. Isaac Fierro also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Helix has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Grossmont, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-14.

Helix will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Foothillers: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
