Baseball Game Preview: Everglades Gators vs. Mater Academy Charter Lions

The Everglades Gators will square off against the Mater Academy Charter Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Everglades is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.

On Friday, Everglades came up short against Gulliver Prep and fell 9-5.

Anthony Lugo was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. He has become a key player for Everglades: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 7-10 otherwise.

Meanwhile, after only one run in their last game, Mater Academy Charter made sure to put some runs up on the board against Dr. Krop on Thursday. The Lions were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Lightning. Considering the Lions' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

Vladi Baldepina looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Yodelkis Quevedo was a standout: he scored three runs while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Jonathan Esponda, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Mater Academy Charter always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .645. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Mater Academy Charter is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-9-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games. As for Everglades, their loss dropped their record down to 9-11.

Everglades suffered a grim 11-4 defeat to Mater Academy Charter in their previous meeting back in May of 2022. Can the Gators avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
