Basketball Recap: Monticello Takes a Loss

If Monticello was riding high fresh off their 61-40 takedown of Louisa County last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Monticello Mustangs were dealt a 71-28 loss at the hands of the Albemarle Patriots on Friday. The Mustangs were red-hot offensively headed into the matchup (they scored no less than 55 points in the three games prior) but the Patriots' defense proved too tough.

When it comes to explaining why Monticello lost, don't look at Sam Messinger. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 9 on his way to 14 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Monticello smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in seven consecutive contests.

Monticello's defeat dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Albemarle, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 11-2.

Monticello has already played their next game, a 56-55 victory against Orange County on the 21st. As for Albemarle, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 53-40 win against Charlottesville on the 20th.
