Softball Game Preview: West Mifflin Titans vs. Plum Mustangs

The West Mifflin Titans will square off against the Plum Mustangs at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. West Mifflin's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Plum's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Last Wednesday, West Mifflin came up short against Seton LaSalle and fell 7-3.

TAYLOR KRIVANEK made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. SAMANTHA TOMKO also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Plum). They were the clear victors by a 17-7 margin over Fox Chapel on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won five matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Riley Stephans was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Plum got a massive performance out of Mackenzie Marotta, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Liana Yusko was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI.

Plum kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits every time they've taken the field this season.

West Mifflin's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Plum, their win bumped their record up to 6-1.

West Mifflin took their victory against Plum in their previous matchup back in April of 2022 by a conclusive 11-1. Will West Mifflin repeat their success, or does Plum has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
