League recap: Sharkey Issaquena Academy wins, gets boost in standings

MAIS A District 6 (8 Man) recap Oct. 3, 2012

Sharkey Issaquena Academy was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in MAIS A District 6 (8 Man). The Confederates defeated North Sunflower Academy 56-6 earlier in the week.

Sharkey Issaquena Academy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Rebels, 56-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.

Veritas's dynamic duo of J. Davis and R. Nicholas proved tough for Briarfield Academy to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Davis threw for 50 yards and one touchdown and Nicholas had 31 yards receiving. C. Caston helped Veritas' passing attack out by catching one ball for 11 yards.

Austin Steed made the biggest impact on defense this week as Sharkey Issaquena Academy bested North Sunflower Academy. The 6-foot-1 sophomore grabbed one interception.

Kenneth Mccurdy was the most productive running back in the league this week. In seven carries, he ran for 124 yards as the Confederates fell to the Rebels. Cooper Anthony also contributed to the rushing game with 72 yards on the ground.

Robert Green has thrown for 600 yards and six touchdowns this season, while James Myrick has 23 catches for 470 yards. Myrick leads the league in rushing with 796 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Clinton Christian Academy and Christian Collegiate Academy. Clinton Christian Academy enters the contest ranked fifth in the state, while the Bulldogs ranks 12th.

Sharkey Issaquena Academy took down Tom Thompson's team 56-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Mccurdy caught two passes for 10 yards in the win.
