Baseball Preview: Montgomery Aztecs vs. Westview Wolverines
The Montgomery Aztecs will take on the Westview Wolverines in a tournament on Friday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Montgomery saw some tournament action on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Helix, sneaking past 5-3.
Montgomery got a great performance from Jesus Cano as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits (and only one walk).
On the hitting side, Montgomery saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Noah Flores, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Westview had to endure a four-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They put the hurt on Grossmont with a sharp 12-6 win on Thursday.
Jacob Kuy made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Kuy was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Charles Jaskowiak was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Irvine, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Westview kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive games dating back to last season.
The victory got Westview back to even at 1-1. As for Montgomery, the win also got them back to even at 1-1.
