Softball Game Preview: La Vernia Bears vs. Gonzales Apaches

La Vernia and Gonzales are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Bears will take on the Apaches at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in La Vernia's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three matchups.

La Vernia's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over John F. Kennedy. The Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 games by six runs or more this season.

Lucy Schlachter made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bryanna Farias, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Makayla Soriano, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

La Vernia was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .448 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Gonzales unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 12-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of Cuero.

La Vernia's record now sits at 19-7. As for Gonzales, they now have a losing record of 9-10.

La Vernia came up short against Gonzales in their previous meeting two weeks ago, falling 9-6. Can the Bears avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
