Basketball Recap: Sandia Prep Gets the Win

If Cottonwood Classical Prep wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Sandia Prep, they should've done a better job of containing Taylor Calkins. The Sandia Prep Sundevils took down the Cottonwood Classical Prep Coyotes 46-30 on Tuesday thanks in part to Calkins, who went 6 for 13 en route to 17 points along with seven boards and three blocks. That's the most points she has posted since back in February of 2024.

Madlyn Dopson was another key player, putting up 16 points and six assists. She continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played.

Despite the defeat, Cottonwood Classical Prep saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ryah Carlson posted 13 points and three steals. Carlson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last four games she's played.

The victory got Sandia Prep back to even at 9-9. As for Cottonwood Classical Prep, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-17 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sandia Prep will face off against Cuba at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Sandia Prep will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Cottonwood Classical Prep, they will square off against Oak Grove Classical Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Cottonwood Classical Prep is facing Oak Grove Classical Academy at the right time seeing as Oak Grove Classical Academy is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
